So my doctor is 99% sure that I have an intolerance to gluten. He urged me to start on a gluten free diet as soon as possible. So last Sunday I started eating gluten free. At first it was kind of fun. I tried some new recipes and actually liked them. But then the withdrawal symptoms started: irritability, orneriness, grumpiness, craving gluten filled foods...let me give you an example.
Friday we were supposed to go camping with some friends. Unfortunately the smoke from the 800+ fires caused us to cancel the trip. Since we had been saving our $$ for this trip, Dan and I decided to go eat at a nice restaurant instead. We went to a place that has gluten free food for me. I was pretty excited to try it out but became very depressed when they brought a small loaf of hot bread for us to eat. Well, those of you who know me know that bread is one of my favorite foods EVER! So I was crestfallen to realize that I was not going to be able to have any.
Well later that night our camping group went over to one of our houses for a movie and to enjoy the food we were supposed to have while camping. And so the next major disappointment occurred: they made dutch oven peach cobbler and I could only watch everyone eat it. Peach cobbler is my favorite camping food of all time. This made me even more upset, grumpy and ornery.
So to those of you who are on a gluten free diet: Does it ever get better? Will I ever get to the point that I won't have the withdrawal symptoms and the disappointment of not having these foods that I love oh so much? Will I ever stop being grumpy & irritable (Dan is hoping so and would like to find this out as well)?
A special apology to the Langstraats and the Stephens for having to deal with me on Friday and to Dan for having to deal with me all weekend. It has not been a pretty experience!!
